When I look back on some of my most acutely life-changing moments, it seems a little ridiculous to count eating curry on the side of the road in Bangkok among them. And yet, here I am.
How I got there:
It was about two weeks after I got all my stuff stolen (passport, cards, cash, wallet, ID, phone, everything of value to me, etc.) and I was feeling pretty darn crappy about the whole thing.
So I decided to venture to Bangkok alone for a weekend to
drink myself into oblivion get my mind off things.
I stayed at a gorgeous, impossible-to-find hostel where the front desk worker became an immediate friend. She offered to show me around Bangkok the next day!! On the to-do list was eating something delicious in Chinatown.
She led us through the winding little alleyways filled with flower carts and foods I couldn’t identify. It felt like we were walking for hours. I was convinced that I was actually melting and that we were probably lost.
Then suddenly, we got to a dirty alley with a curry cart and a lineup of red plastic stools down the narrow curb beside it.
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical.
I ate the most delicious yellow curry I’ve ever had in my life, filled with strips of beef and little pieces of sweet pork and topped with cucumbers.
It trumped every fancy restaurant meal I’ve ever eaten and everything I’ve ever cooked. As I was stuffing my face and looking around at all the old Thai men on the stools and the trash in the alley I started wondering how I ended up here.
I spent hours walking during the hottest part of the day to find a dirty curry cart in the middle of Chinatown. With someone I had just met the day before.
And now, here I was eating the most delicious meal of my life.
The sheer ridiculousness of it was hysterical.
How to get there:
You might be reading this and thinking, “okay but just shut up and tell me where I go to eat this already.” I feel you.
Here are the details:
Khao Gaeng Jake Puey
427 Mangkon Rd, Khwaeng Pom Prap, Khet Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10100, Thailand
It’s also right across the street from a Starbucks, which is how I found it a second time. I had issues with my Google maps app finding the address of the cart, but it found the Starbucks no problem.
Give this address a try if you’re having trouble:
Starbucks Station One
417 Charoen Krung Rd, Khwaeng Pom Prap, Khet Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10100, Thailand
Quick tip: Get there as close to opening as you can, because there will be a line already and they will sell out. And get the yellow curry. Always get the yellow curry.
What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten while traveling?
